CHP: Man fatally hits 6-year-old son while backing out of driveway in Tesla

TEMECULA, Calif. (KESQ) - A man backing out of his driveway in a Tesla Cybertruck struck and killed his 6-year-old son just east of Temecula, authorities said today.

Preston El Guindy was fatally hit just before 9 p.m. Saturday outside his family's residence on Brookhaven Court, near Highway 79, according to the California Highway Patrol.  

Officer Jesus Garcia said that Tarik El Guindy, 48, was exiting his driveway, in reverse, when the Cybertruck plowed into Preston.   

"At the time of the incident, the Tesla was not operating in autopilot mode,'' Garcia said.

Apparently no dashboard alerts flashed or sounded to notify Guindy that his young son was in the vehicle's path.   

He immediately called 911, and Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within minutes, finding Preston in grave condition. Garcia said the child was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he died that night.

"The CHP extends its condolences to the family and all those affected by this tragic loss,'' the agency spokesman said.   

Guindy was questioned by officers, but there was evidently no indication of intoxication.

The investigation was ongoing Monday.
