Residents react to Riverside County’s relaxing of face-covering orders
Riverside County has loosened some of its health orders regarding the wearing of face masks, that amended order effective May 1st.
"I was just like having anxiety and I feel I can't breathe," said Stephany Gutierrez.
Stephany Gutierrez was quick to take off her face mask after leaving the grocery store. But healthcare worker Sherri Pontes said she's leaving hers on for now.
"I am very uncomfortable with that," said Pontes. "I think we should keep the restrictions in place."
Pontes said she continues to see patients test positive for coronavirus.
"We need that protection," said Pontes. "This virus has been horrid and has changed so much for all of us and has made life so hard."
Palm Springs resident, Jerry Brown talked about his response to the county easing up on requirements for face coverings.
"Because I am over 65 and in the high-risk category," said Brown. "I am going to choose to wear my mask for a while until they get a vaccine."
According to the county's amended order, people participating in outdoor activities are no longer required to use a face covering but must practice social distancing protocols.
"It feels good especially since its getting in the hotter," said Sabrina Cox, a hiker. "Wearing a face mask while hiking its not the best for breathing especially since its an exercise activity and you need to be able to breathe."
"I am happy about it," said Janae Hinger. "I hike every day, and having to wear a mask over my mouth in the heat while I am hiking is really hard so I am fine with and glad. "
County officials recommend keeping masks and coverings ready to use when coming across other people along trails and walks and to wear face coverings while at essential businesses including grocery stores, hospitals, and when using public transportation.
Janae Hinger is thrilled the county's board of supervisors will vote Tuesday on whether to make the use of face masks a recommendation rather than a requirement.
"Fantastic, let's get back to normal," said Hinger.
