Riverside County COVID-hospitalizations pass 600 patients for first time since early September

NEW CASES

Riverside County reported 1,818 new coronavirus cases since its last report on Monday. This brings the total number of cases in the county up to 406,421.

The Coachella Valley has a total of 64,321 COVID-19 cases. The valley's data gets updated every Monday.

Local School Cases -

  • DSUSD- 302 active cases, 87 staff and 215 students (Only district back to school right now)
  • PSUSD- 40 total, all students
  • CVUSD- No Data at the moment

In December, Riverside County has reported 22,205 coronavirus cases. It was the third-highest case total in 2021, but below January and the peak of the delta surge in August.

Case & Positivity Rate

The county's case rate per 100K continues to balloon.

Last Monday, the case rate was at 20.6 per 100K. This Monday, the case rate is now at 39.0. By Tuesday, the county was reporting a case rate of 52.2

This is the highest the county's case rate has been since we began tracking it in March 2021.

On Dec. 3, the county's case rate was at 13.6.

The county's positivity rate also saw another big jump over the past 24 hours. The positivity rate was at 6.4% last Monday. This Monday, the rate was at 10.7%. By Tuesday, the county's positivity rate was at 14.5%.

On Dec. 3, the county positivity rate was at 5.7%.

As of Dec. 29, there are at least nine known cases of the Omicron variant in Riverside County. The first was detected in a resident of the west end of the county earlier month. The second was found during a Covid outbreak at a local restaurant last week.

DEATHS & RECOVERIES

Riverside County reported 0 additional COVID deaths since Monday. The county has reported a total of 5,589 COVID-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

There have been a total of 1,115 COVID-19 deaths recorded in the Coachella Valley.

The county reported 791 recoveries since Monday. There are a total of 387,785 recoveries in the county.

Hospitalizations and ICU data

Riverside County reported 63 additional COVID-related hospitalizations, but 7 fewer patients in the ICU, since Thursday.

So far, in the first two reportable days of January, the county has reported 226 COVID-19 hospitalizations.

There is a total of 595 hospitalizations which includes 101 patients in the ICU.

According to Elizabeth Wholihan, a spokesperson for Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, the hospital has 45 COVID-19 patients. There are three patients in the ICU with Covid. Wholihan noted that the hospitals ICUs are very busy with other non-Covid cases as well.

"Our ICU medical director has noted that there is usually a lag between an increase in Covid cases in the hospital and an increase in Covid cases in the ICU. He expects the increase in the ICU to happen in a couple of weeks," Wholihan writes.

This marks the first time COVID-19 hospitalizations in Riverside County have surpassed 600 patients since Sept. 9, 2021. It's also the highest number of patients since Sep. 7, 2021.

This is the most hospitalizations since Sept. 10, 2021, when the county reported 575 patients hospitalized due to COVID.

At the start of December, there was a total of 238 COVID-related hospitalizations with 61 patients in the ICU. In comparison to last year on December 29th, 2020, the county reported 1,448 hospitalizations. 

In comparison, on Jan 4, 2021, the county had a total of 1543 COVID-related hospitalizations with 330 patients in the ICU.

Vaccination Data

58.5% of eligible Riverside County residents are fully vaccinated, according to county data.

3,595,730 vaccine doses have been administered so far.

Seniors who need assistance can dial 2-1-1. Those who register must show proof of age/employment at the time of appointment. Residents under 18 must have a parent or guardian with them when arriving at their vaccine appointment.
