Coachella middle school placed on brief lockdown after nearby car-to-car shooting

Reports of a shooting outside of a local middle school led to a short lockdown at Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella.

A teacher heard gunshots around the area and called 911, to Lissette Santiago, public information officer for the Coachella Valley Unified School District.

The shooting was reported around the 85300 block of Cairo Street.

Authorities said the investigation revealed a suspect fired a round from a handgun at a parked vehicle parked on Cairo St. The suspect then fled the scene in a green sports utility vehicle. 

Deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the suspect. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male adult, approximately 20-25 years old. 

There were no injuries reported in the shooting. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from nearby residences and businesses in an attempt to identify the suspect vehicle involved. 

No arrests have been made at this time.

Bobby Duke Middle School was placed on a brief lockdown, which was lifted at 3:11 p.m.

"Students and staff are safe and normal school operations have resumed. LEO continues to search the surrounding area for casings," Santiago wrote.
