SigAlert: Truck fire involving hazardous waste blocks I-10 freeway lanes

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert for lane closures on Interstate 10 in Cabazon Thursday due to a fire involving hazardous waste aboard a truck.

CalFire Riverside County says the the fire was reported on a Burrtec Waste Management truck at 9:14 a.m. in the westbound freeway lanes near the Main Street offramp.

Two lanes were closed to traffic and westbound traffic lanes were backed up toward Palm Springs for approximately 5 miles.

The waste truck was carrying 32,000 pounds of household hazardous waste materials that had caught fire and needed to be removed from the vehicle.

The lane closure was expected to continue for two hours for clean up efforts.

Drivers were cautioned to give some extra time if traveling west out of the Coachella Valley due to the traffic congestion.
