Sheriff’s Office identifies 18-year-old killed in Mecca shooting near sports complex

MECCA, Calif. (KESQ) - An 18-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday night near the Mecca Sports Complex, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies from the Thermal Sheriff’s Station responded at about 7:58 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the intersection of Coahuilla Street and 6th Street in Mecca.

When deputies arrived, they found Anjel Rodriguez, an 18-year-old resident of Thermal, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told News Channel 3 they heard more than 30 shots fired.

Deputies established a perimeter around the area, and a sheriff’s helicopter was seen circling overhead. Date Palm Street was closed as authorities investigated.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Central Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. No arrests have been made.

Authorities said the investigation remains active and ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
