One person killed, three injured in crash on SR-86 in Salton City

KESQ

SALTON CITY, Calif. (KESQ) — One person was killed, three others were injured after a crash Monday along State Route 86 in Salton City.

The crash was reported Monday just before 8:30 p.m. on SR-86, near Norm Niver Road, just south of Red Earth Casino.

CHP officials said a driver in a Honda Accord was approaching at a stop sign at the intersection. For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Honda traveled into the direct lane of travel of a 2007 Kia Spectra traveling southbound on State Route 86, at Norm Niver Road, at approximately 70 miles per hour.

The front of the Kia impacted with the left side of the Honda, causing both vehicles to lose control before coming to rest on their wheels on scene.

As a result of the crash, a passenger, identified as a 50-year-old man, was ejected from the Honda. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The driver of the Honda and another passenger sustained major injuries and were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center. The driver of the Kia sustained moderate injuries.

Police determined that the passengers of the Honda were not restrained at the time of the crash.

"The California Highway Patrol wants to remind the motoring public regular seat belt use is the single most effective way for people to reduce injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle collisions," reads a CHP news release.

Lanes were closed for several hours, reopening by 7 a.m.
