Palm Springs Pride gets underway as crowds take over downtown
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — Downtown Palm Springs is filling with music, dancing and crowds as the city's annual Pride celebration gets underway, marking 40 years of Pride in the community.
The festivities are taking over downtown, with live DJs, entertainment, a Ferris wheel and people gathering throughout the area to celebrate.
For many attendees, the atmosphere is what makes the event special.
But for many, Pride represents more than just a weekend of entertainment. Attendees say it's also about joy, acceptance and bringing people together.
“It means joy. It makes me smile. Makes me have a fun day,” one attendee said.
Even first-time visitors are getting a positive impression of the celebration.
“First day not so bad. Pretty cool. I like the vibe,” another attendee said.
The event also continues to attract people who have made Palm Springs their home because of its LGBTQ+ community.
“I think that Palm Springs is a gay community and that's why I moved here when I retired 18 years ago,” a resident said.
Others are traveling from farther away to experience the celebration. Angel, who traveled from Mexico City, said they're looking forward to meeting new people and enjoying the weekend.
“I am looking forward to having fun, connecting with new people, the DJs are killing it, the parade on Sunday. It's going to be amazing!” Angel said.
Attendees also shared messages of celebration and acceptance with the community.
“Just be you, accept yourself, be friendly with your neighbors, and happy Pride!” the attendee said.
The celebrations continue throughout the weekend, leading up to the Palm Springs Pride Parade on Sunday, Nov. 8.
