Bicyclist hit by vehicle in Mecca, killed in crash

An official with the California Highway Patrol said officers received a call of a vehicle versus bicycle that happened on 66th Avenue, just east of SR-86 around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Officers arrived at the location and said they found a man who had been hit by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead.

Investigators said there were no witnesses. They did not have a suspect or suspect vehicle description.

The victim was described as a homeless man, 58.

A crash that left a bicyclist dead was under investigation over the weekend.

Cal Fire said it happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Avenue 66 and SR-86 in Mecca.

Emergency crews located the bicyclist, who had been hit by a vehicle. The rider of the bike reportedly died at the scene.

There was no word on the person who was driving the other vehicle as of 3:00 a.m. Saturday. Investigators with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department were leading the investigation.
