The warm-up begins today and continues through the week

On Saturday, Palm Springs reached a high temperature of 95°. The average for yesterday was 95°. Today, temperatures will be 5°-10° warmer and the warm-up will continue through the week.

The trough of low pressure that kept conditions near-average yesterday is shifting east. A ridge of high pressure begins to amplify off the coast. This ridge will move towards us by Monday, where temperatures will already be nearing 105°.

As we head into this coming week we will see a prolonged period of higher temperatures. The reason has to do with this "omega block" pattern. By Tuesday, this ridge of high pressure will be in the middle of two areas of low pressure. This pattern creates a stationary effect for a prolonged period of time where we are expected to see hot temperatures and clear conditions. The name comes from the shape, resembling the Greek letter omega.

An Excessive Heat Watch has been upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning beginning noon Tuesday and lasting through 7 p.m. Friday. Temperatures will range between 108°-112° during this time. The hottest days of the week will be Wednesday and Thursday. Heat illness will be possible, especially for sensitive groups.

Some tips to remember during the heat:

  • Avoid any strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Try staying away from caffeine and alcohol as they dehydrate you.
  • Never leave kids or pets unattended in a vehicle. Look before you lock!
  • Wear light-colored or loose-fitted clothing while outdoors.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade.

On Memorial Day, temperatures will already be reaching to 104°. Be sure to stay with News Channel 3 by downloading the First Alert Weather App.
