Triple digits are here to stay this week

Sunday, Palm Springs reached a high temperature of 101°. The average for this time of year is 96°. High pressure is continuing to build and move over California. This area of high pressure is going to keep temperatures warm all through the week.

The reason we are seeing a prolonged period of higher temperatures is because of this "omega block" weather pattern. By Tuesday, this ridge of high pressure will be in the middle of two areas of low pressure over California. This pattern creates a stationary effect for a prolonged period of time where we are expected to see hot temperatures and clear conditions. The name comes from the shape, resembling the Greek letter omega.

With this prolonged time frame of heat, there is an Excessive Heat Warning for the Coachella Valley and high deserts beginning at noon Tuesday and lasting through 7 p.m. Friday. Temperatures are expected to be the warmest in the desert Wednesday and Thursday. We could see temperatures as high as 112°.

Some tips to remember during the heat:

  • Avoid any strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Try staying away from caffeine and alcohol as they dehydrate you.
  • Never leave kids or pets unattended in a vehicle. Look before you lock!
  • Wear light-colored or loose-fitted clothing while outdoors.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade.

Memorial Day, today, will be only a couple degrees warmer than Sunday. Then the excessive heat moves in Tuesday. Temperatures expected to reach to 110° by Wednesday.
