Insider Blog: An update on California’s climate legislation this session

As California's 2023 legislative session comes to a close, there are a number of bills relating to climate legislation which have passed and are awaiting the governor's signature to become law.

One of the bills which has been talked about the most is the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act. This bill would require corporations with revenues of over 1 billion dollars to disclose their Carbon emissions. Another, similar bill would require corporations with revenues of over 500 million dollars to report climate-related financial risks. Governor Newsom is expected to sign both bills.

One of the more notable bills which did not pass was the bill which would have created the 'Salton Sea Conservancy'. This conservancy would manage the conservation projects related to the Salton Sea. While it passed the state assembly earlier this month, it was made 'inactive' by State Senator Steve Padilla. It will remain in the state Senate for the next session as the bill undergoes further negotiations.
