Excessive heat is back for the week, along with monsoon moisture

A relentless ridge of high pressure is not ready to give up on the Desert Southwest just yet. The dome of hot air will continue to deliver above-normal temperatures for the remainder of the week.

The clockwise flow of the high pressure is feeding moisture from the southeast into Southern California. We've been feeling the humidity for days, but the right setup was in place for thunderstorms to develop over San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains this afternoon.

The latest Excessive Heat Warning is now scheduled to remain in effect until 8:00 p.m. Friday. The combination of hot temperatures and additional moisture can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Take extra precautions if working or spending time outdoors.

Hot afternoons and warm overnights will be the weather story into the weekend. A drop closer to the seasonal average arrives early next week.
