Rescue Mission helps woman living in car for 2 years
A woman who spent two years and a majority of her pregnancy living inside a car at a homeless encampment in Coachella is thanking a local shelter for their help. Veronica Parra, spent 8 months of her pregnancy living out of her car along with her husband.
Parra’s husband was a field worker and a mechanic, the couple went through hard times which led to the two of them living inside a car. A few months before she gave birth, her husband was deported to Mexico. The last time she saw her husband was on May 13 and the last time she spoke to him was June 23.
Help came from Tom Cox, the Director of Programs at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission. “He went to where the camp was at and he talked to me and said that he can help me and that they have a room here for mommy’s and baby’s and that as soon as I had my baby they had a room here waiting for me,” Parra says.
Parra gave birth to her now 18-day-old newborn boy named, Serafin. She says the time she spent without her husband made her stronger.
Parra says she is now happy with the support she needs for her child. After the birth of Serafin, she went back to the place where she once called home and found that her car was gone and crews have cleaned up the area.
Parra is now remaining hopeful to one day to be reunited with her husband. She is now in the process of finding a house for her and Serafin to live in, with assistance from the rescue mission.
