Desert Hot Springs man accused in girlfriend’s stabbing pleads guilty to evading arrest
A man set to stand trial soon on an attempted murder charge for allegedly stabbing his live-in girlfriend in Desert Hot Springs, then leading police on a freeway chase that ended near Cabazon, pleaded guilty Thursday to a single felony count of evading arrest.
Charles Campbell Jr., 40, is accused of repeatedly stabbing his 42-year-old girlfriend, identified as Jane Doe in court documents, on Jan. 12, 2016.
Desert Hot Springs police received reports of the stabbing just before 6 p.m. at a home in the 11700 block of Upland Way, said Sgt. Phil Weigle. Police found a woman who told officers that Campbell had stabbed her with a knife multiple times and threatened to kill her, according to the sergeant. She was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Campbell was gone by the time officers arrived but was spotted returning to the home at 8:05 p.m. in a white 2000 Ford SUV. Officers attempted to pull Campbell over, but he sped away, leading police on a chase through Desert Hot Springs and onto Interstate 10, Weigle said.
He was eventually taken into custody on the freeway near Malki Road in Cabazon by Desert Hot Springs police, who were assisted by the California Highway Patrol.
Though Campbell pleaded guilty to evading arrest in connection with the pursuit, he awaits trial on charges of attempted murder and domestic violence, with several sentence-enhancing allegations for using a weapon.
Jury selection is expected to begin sometime next week at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
