Statewide Flex Alert issued amid heat wave
A statewide Flex Alert has been issued for Friday, marking the second time this week a voluntary electricity conservation period was issued.
The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state’s power grid, asks residents to conserve power from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Cal-ISO noted that power demand could reach record levels on Friday thanks to the continuing heat wave.
People participating in the Flex Alert say they do so to prevent from losing power. Folks like Darlene Davis, say they’re ding their best to conserve energy.
“Doing laundry at night. Turn my thermostat up to 78 degrees,” said Davis.
Steven Greenlee is a spokesperson with Claifornia ISO and he tells News Channel 3/CBS Local 2 there’s a great response from Californians, but still the demand for power can break records.
“We set our all time record at 50,270 mega watts, which was set on July 24, 2006 and todays forecast is 50,900 mega watts,” Greenlee said.
according to greenlee — when the demand for electricty exceeds the supply…power outage rollovers can take affect.
