Students collect coins for hurricane survivors
Some Indio students have seen all the damage from our hurricanes and are doing something to make a difference by raising money to help the hurricane survivors in Texas, Florida and elsewhere.
Second graders at Indio’s Amelia Earhart Elementary School say they want to make a difference in other people’s lives.“Our teacher said, ‘Let’s bring some change and put it in a bucket and we will donate it to the Red Cross,'” said Johan Gomez, a second-grade student.
Students have been collecting coins in an effort their teachers are calling, “Treasures for Texas.”
They got the idea after seeing all the damage of Hurricane Harvey in Houston…
Second-grade student Taylor Green said, “We will be watching the news and seeing how hurricanes are ruining people’s lives.”
Another second grader Lila Wilkey said her teacher encouraged her class to act. Wilkey said, “She’s like, ‘Hey you guys, Why don’t we try to make the world a different place by helping out Texas and trying to raise money for it.'”
The effort is also educational by teaching children to take action to make a difference, both locally and globally…
Teachers believe they’ve raised approximately $800 and they’re giving it all to the American Red Cross after seeing calls to help on TV.
