What you need to know about getting a Real ID in 2020
The year 2020 is upon us. Among all the changes, getting a Real ID will now be required for Californians who decide to travel domestically, and do not have a U.S. Passport.
"I’ll need a couple of identification documents. Proof of social security number [...]," driver John Sesmas said.
Sesmas hasn't yet applied for the card. He says he'll do it sometime in the next few months.
The Real ID goes into effect October 1, 2020. It serves several purposes, such as allowing residents to enter into facilities like federal courthouses and military bases.
“The process was very simple and streamlined. I was here probably just about an hour total," driver Bob Kramer said.
Kramer applied, brought the proper documentation and is now waiting for his Real ID. The process is a breeze if you have all the right documents, but it can also become a headache. The DMV advises potential applicants to double check what they need before making a trip to an office.
According to the agency's website, you must first fill out an application, which can also be done online. From there, you will need to gather proof of identity, which can include a birth certificate, US Passport and more. You'll also need proof of your social security number, which can be from a social security card, W-2 with the full number on it, and more. Two proofs of residency are also required. Both must include the same address as the Real ID application. Documents can include a lease agreement, mortgage bill, utility bill, and more. If you have changed your name for reasons including, but not limited to adoption, marriage and divorce, more documentation will likely need to be submitted.
Applicants are also advised to make an appointment to expedite the process, and avoid longer wait times.
