Controlled burns planned near Idyllwild all week
Fire crews are slated today through the end of the week to burn piles of brush and debris just north of Idyllwild, and residents and motorists were advised not to be alarmed by the smoke.
The slash pile burning is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the north side of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, between Highway 243 and Red Hill Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The prescribed burn will consist of woody debris piles constructed
as part of an ongoing hazardous fuel reduction,'' according to an agency statement.
The project goal is to improve fire suppression effectiveness, reduce the intensity and duration of wildfire, reduce the rate of fire spread and allow for safe evacuation of the public in case of fire.''
Smoke may be visible in the San Gorgonio Pass and south along state Route 74.
The prescribed burn was timed to coincide with the cool, moist winter conditions prevalent at the mile-high location.
If weather conditions change, including an increase in winds through the San Bernardino National Forest, the controlled burn may be called off, according to the fire department.
Southern California's wildfire season generally spans from May to November, and the county and U.S. Forest Service are eradicating excess foliage strategically in preparation for the next season.
This week's operation will likely conclude on Friday, officials said.
Anyone with questions or concerns was asked to contact the county fire public information bureau at 951-940-6985.
