West Nile Virus found in mosquitoes in south La Quinta
Another sample of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile Virus in south La Quinta. Experts say it's common to see a spike in mosquitos this time of year.
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District has posted several signs in the area.
A representative says they've been testing standing water daily for the three species of mosquitoes that carry the virus.
"Try to limit your time outdoors at dusk and dawn, because that's when these mosquitoes are most active, and try to get rid of any of that standing water. mosquitoes breed in water. So, if we can do something as simple as just going around our homes and dumping out that water, we'll have a lot less mosquitoes," said Tammy Gordon, public information officer for the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District.
Officials recommend wearing mosquito repellent on exposed skin. If you plan to be outside for six hours you want to make sure your repellent has 30 percent "deet."
