Measure J funds new playground in Palm Springs, City leaders hope to keep similar projects going

It's just one of the projects provided through Measure J funds in Palm Springs. But, projects like these could soon hit a roadblock if changes aren't made.

In 2011, Palm Springs voters approved Measure J. It's paid for through a 1 cent sales tax increase to maintain local community services, and revitalize downtown -- this includes the playground. Measure J also includes a 'Sunset Provision,' causing the tax to expire on 2037.

That's why leadership says the playground is just another reason to ensure the tax stays.

“Measure J provides over 10% of our city budget and I’m really excited to see it fund infrastructure projects that benefit everyone. It has funded the downtown revitalization, fire station 4, the plaza theater and it can also fund things for kids and families like parks.”

Discussions on whether to place this question on the November ballot will be taking place at next week's city council.
