China sanctions US Rep. McGovern for ‘interference’ in its domestic affairs

BANGKOK (AP) — China has sanctioned another U.S. lawmaker for “frequently interfering” in China’s domestic affairs. The sanctions against Rep. Jim McGovern include freezing any Chinese assets, prohibiting anyone in China from working with him and denying him a visa to enter the country. The move is symbolic, since the Massachusetts Democrat has no assets or business dealings in China. McGovern called the sanctions absurd and that he would wear them “as a badge of honor.” China has issued several rounds of sanctions against U.S. lawmakers and companies as relations have soured between Beijing and Washington. McGovern was among lawmakers who introduced a bill calling for stronger U.S. support for Tibet, which President Joe Biden has signed into law.
