Local business shares how egg price spike is impacting them
As egg prices continue to rise nationwide due to a surge of bird flu cases, local business owners are starting to worry.
"El Cielo Bakery" in Cathedral City is one of the businesses feeling the punch.
David Cervantes, owner, says they now have to pay twice as much for the same amount of eggs. It's costing him about $20 for 20 eggs, up from nearly $10 a year ago.
With eggs being the primary ingredient, going through hundreds a day, those costs can quickly add up.
His daughter, Stephanie Cervantes, says it looks like they'll have to raise prices too.
“We use eggs for everything, it’s in every bread we use... I know they won’t be too happy about it but everybody has to understand everything is going up.”

She says it's not an easy decision for them because it could lead to a decline in customers.
According to the USDA's price outlook, egg prices are predicted to increase about 20% in 2025, compared to about 2.2% for overall food prices.
