Demonstrators rally across Coachella Valley on May Day

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. — Dozens of demonstrators gathered across the Coachella Valley on Friday to mark International Workers’ Day, using the occasion to highlight concerns about economic pressures, workers’ rights, and policies they say are affecting working families.

In Rancho Mirage, participants lined the streets holding signs and chanting in support of labor rights. Attendees said the event was not only about visibility, but about pushing for change on issues impacting workers and immigrant communities nationwide. Several people emphasized the importance of civic engagement, arguing that public demonstrations are key to driving political and social change.

Some demonstrators voiced frustration with national leadership and economic conditions, pointing to rising costs and broader policy decisions they believe are negatively affecting everyday Americans.

A separate gathering in Coachella brought together members of United Domestic Workers, who advocated for caregivers and essential workers, particularly those providing in-home support services. Organizers highlighted the scale of that workforce in Riverside County and stressed the need to protect funding and programs that support both workers and the people they care for.

For many in the largely Latino communities of the Coachella Valley, the demonstrations also carried a message about equality and inclusion. Participants spoke about concerns over discrimination and the importance of recognizing the contributions of immigrant workers.

Organizers said the momentum from May Day events is intended to carry forward, encouraging continued activism and participation in upcoming elections, including the governor’s race and midterms.
