Van filled with clothing catches fire

Firefighters made quick work of an early morning vehicle fire in Indio.

They were called to the Jefferson Street I-10 Interchange minutes before four a.m. where they found a van on fire, filled with plastic-wrapped bales of clothes.

The driver said he had purchased the clothing in Los Angeles and was planning to sell them at a swap meet in Calexico.

But his van suffered a tire blowout that ignited a fire.

CalFire Riverside County Firefighter, John Clark, said “The driver of this vehicle had a blowout I-10. It resulted in the material heated up inside his vehicle. As a result, burned the material.”

Firefighters worked to pull the plastic-wrapped bundles out of the back of the van and put the fire out.

No injuries were reported.
