Big Bear bald eagle Jackie remains critically ill despite slight improvement

OJAI, Calif. (KESQ) - The Ojai Raptor Center says Jackie, the bald eagle found at Big Bear Lake, remains in critical and unstable condition.

The center says Jackie's packed cell volume (PCV) — a measure of the percentage of red blood cells in her blood — fell below 6% yesterday. Today, it increased to 9%.

While the increase is a small improvement, the center says Jackie's PCV remains critically low and her overall condition is still extremely serious.

Her condition is being closely evaluated by a collaborative team that includes nine veterinarians, along with representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The center says there is no additional medical information to share at this time, adding that the team's focus remains on Jackie's welfare and providing the care she needs.

Jackie has been receiving treatment after being found on the ground on Big Bear Lake following a confrontation with two other bald eagles.

The center revealed that the encounter with eagles likely left her grounded, but experts do not believe it is what caused her illness.

Officials say another update will be provided when there is meaningful new information about her condition.
