Extreme Heat Warning Extended, Big Cooldown Arrives Sunday

Our Extreme Heat Warning has now been extended--yes, again--through 8 p.m. Saturday as we expect one more day of above-average heat in the lower 110s across the Coachella Valley.

Overnight lows will also remain unusually warm in the upper 80s and low 90s, offering very little relief and keeping HeatRisk elevated. In fact, numerous locations broke maximum low temperature records yesterday, including Palm Springs at 90 degrees.

I'm watching lingering monsoonal moisture which could bring a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms over the mountains today, with an isolated storm potentially drifting into the desert, though so far coverage looks pretty limited.

Here's the big talker! BIG change arrives Sunday as our ridge finally gets pushed east, kicking off a noticeable cooling trend to below average highs and lows into early next week. 103 degrees for September 1st!

Dew points drop a bit Sunday night through Tuesday, so that helps. We're still keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Karina, still well to our south, but could send additional clouds and moisture our way Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing about a 20–30% chance for some light rain across the region.
