Riverside County proclaimed a local emergency and set a countywide curfew tonight from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The curfew will expire Tuesday at 6 a.m. County officials say it will not apply to residents who have to leave their homes to go to their essential work or business after 6 p.m.
County spokesperson Brooke Federico confirmed to News Channel 3 people do not need proof they are heading to work.
The order applies to all cities and unincorporated areas across the county.
The local emergency will last for 7 days, but the curfew order will expire on Tuesday.
County officials say the curfew is in response to rioting and looting across Southern California over the weekend. There are multiple planned protests set for today in Riverside County.
“We want the community to be able to peacefully assemble and exercise their first amendment rights,” said County Executive Officer and Director of Emergency Services George Johnson. “We must also take action to protect our community from threats of rioting and chaos. If you plan to visit a protest today, we urge you to do so peacefully and return home at the time of the curfew.”
According to county officials, law enforcement will continue to serve the community, conducting patrols and responding to calls for service.
