CHP: Motorcyclist in fatal Highway 74 crash ‘traveled into oncoming traffic’
A Palm Desert man who was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 74 Sunday afternoon crossed into oncoming traffic on his motorcycle shortly before the crash, according to California Highway Patrol. The man has been identified as 50-year-old James Devlin of Palm Desert.
“For reasons still under investigation, the BMW traveled into the single eastbound lane, directly in front of the Toyota,” reads a California Highway Patrol news release. “The front of the BMW struck the front of the Toyota, and the rider was ejected from the motorcycle.”
The accident occurred at 2:47 p.m. on Sunday.
The driver of the Prius has been identified as 57-year-old Susan Shoup of Pauma Valley. She was not injured in the collision.
Officers directed traffic both ways for nearly two hours before both lanes were completely re-opened. The collision is still currently under investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Devlin was wearing a full-face helmet and protective gear at the time of the collision. Shoup was also wearing a seatbelt during the crash.
