Suspect killed in Cathedral City officer-involved shooting had criminal past

We are learning more about the criminal past of a suspect shot and killed by Cathedral City Police on April 8th. According to court records, 24-year old Carlos Roman Urias of Cathedral City had 3 cases in Riverside County. 2 cases were from arrests in Riverside, while one happened in La Quinta back in 2014.

The biggest case against Urias occurred in June of 2017, where he pleaded guilty to making criminal threats against an unnamed woman in Riverside. A knife possession charge was ultimately dropped against him in this case. He would be sentenced to 3 years probation.

Earlier that year in January, he was charged with having a knife on the UCR campus and was sentenced to probation.

Here in the valley, Urias was arrested in La Quinta in 2014 for being under the influence of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Cathedral City Police said they were responding to a domestic violence call at an address on Wishing Well Trail at 6:30 a.m. April 8th. When officers arrived on the scene, the woman was outside of the home. While the officers were interviewing her, the suspect, Urias, exited the home holding a gun.
Commander Luna says the officers engaged the suspect and asked him to drop the gun several times. He refused and continued to point the gun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Urias was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he later died. According to police, the firearm in his possession was determined to be a replica gun that was altered to appear to be a functioning weapon. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case.
