La Quinta man assaulted, robbed at gunpoint at city park

Some La Quinta residents are calling for increased lighting and police patrolling on social media after 22-year-old Garrett Harker was assaulted and robbed while walking home from the gym Tuesday night at La Quinta Park.

La Quinta Police responded to the 70-000 block of Westward Ho Drive in response to a reported strong armed robbery. The suspects were described as two young males in their late teens or early twenties, wearing dark colored clothing.

Harker said the attack took him by surprise while walking through the park alone because he was familiar with the area and route. Harker said he complied with the demands from the suspects and feared for his safety after the suspects brandished a gun and pointed it at him. The suspects then fled on foot.

“I was considering running away but they had a gun on me and were pointing it at
me from about four feet away,” Harker said. He said he gave up all belongings he had on him at the time, including his cell phone and car key.

According to the victim’s father, the Riverside County Sheriffs Department told Harker’s family the cameras at La Quinta Park are not functional. News Channel 3 is working to confirm that information.

This investigation is ongoing and the La Quinta Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance with anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the La Quinta Police Department at 760-863-8990.
