Westfield Mall in Palm Desert temporarily evacuated

Customers and staff are now back inside Westfield Palm Desert after a mid-day evacuation from the shopping center.

A security officer confirmed there was smoke detected in one of the electrical rooms, and the building was evacuated as a precaution while officials could investigate.

A triggered alarm alerted CalFire and Sheriff’s Department to rush to the scene. Sheriff Department spokesperson Sergeant Chris Willison tells News Channel 3 that when they arrived, the mall management had located the fire alarm to the north end of the mall, near the gym.

No active fire was found. CalFire is still on scene to determine the cause of the alarm. No injuries have been reported.

Westfield Palm Desert is located on Highway 111.
