Banning woman killed in Cabazon crash identified

Authorities today released the name of a 53-year-old Banning woman who was killed when her SUV clipped a big rig on Interstate 10 in Cabazon, sending the vehicle down an embankment.

Sonia Hernandez died at the scene of the 10:30 a.m. Monday crash on eastbound I-10, about two miles east of Main Street.

California Highway Patrol Officer Darren Meyer said she was driving a 2007 Dodge Nitro that, “for reasons not yet known,” drifted into the neighboring lane, clipping the front of a semi truck.

The impact sent the SUV off the southern edge of the freeway and down a small embankment, trapping Hernandez in the wreckage, Meyer said.
