One person killed in Palm Springs shooting, three people killed in nearby crash

Palm Springs Police Department Chief Bryan Reyes said during a news conference the three victims found at the scene of a fatal traffic collision late Sunday evening sustained gunshot wounds.

Reyes also said that it is not clear at this time if the gunshot wounds caused the deaths of the victims, who are aged 17 – 19. Reyes asks that anyone in the surrounding areas who may have surveillance footage from that night to contact law enforcement to assist with the investigation.

Palm Springs police officers are investigating a homicide and fatal traffic collision that are ‘possibly related’.

According to PSPD, three people, a driver and two passengers, were killed in a traffic collision near the intersection of Sunny Dunes Road and El Placer Road in Palm Springs. The accident was reported at 11:40 p.m Sunday.

At 12:15 a.m. Officers received a report of a man lying in the road on Canon Drive south of Theresa Drive in Palm Springs. Officers found that the man had suffered from a gunshot, and had died before officers arrived.

The victim has not been identified but is believed to be a Palm Springs resident. According to a preliminary release from the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, the shooting victim is a 25-year-old man.

East Sunny Dunes Road between El Placer and Avenida Evelita as well as El Placer between San Antonio and Camino San Miguel were closed for the investigation for over 11 hours, but reopened at 11:40 a.m.

The street has now reopened to traffic.

One neighbor tells us she heard multiple gunshots between 11:30 pm and midnight in the area.

Police are also asking the public to avoid the area of East Sunny Dunes Road, between El Placer Road and Mountain View due to a fatal traffic collision. Officers say the stretch of road will be shut down for a few hours. At least two vehicles are involved. Officers say three people died at the scene, two passengers and a driver and said their vehicle slammed into a parked Jeep.
