Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley host Sports Heroes Luncheon
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley hosted their Sports Hero Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells on Saturday.
The event highlighted the achievements of former athletic superstars who came from the Coachella Valley, as well as the achievements of our current young valley athletes. News Channel 3’s Karen Devine helped emcee the ceremony and News Channel 3’s Blake Arthur recognized twelve of KESQ’s former “Athletes of the Week” on stage.
“It’s wonderful to see so many people out here recognizing us…we’re just a small valley, but we’re a part of something big,” said Nyah Chavez, who was recognized as one of KESQ’s Athletes of the Year.
“The Boys & Girls Club basically instilled a lot into me…to be the man that I am today. It’s character it’s dedication, it’s the will power…but sportsmanship is always going to be there. You have to be that bigger man no matter what,” said Manny Ridge, also recognized as one of KESQ’s Athletes of the Year.
The luncheon also featured a live auction to raise funds for our local athletes as well as several speeches — including keynote speaker Jackie Joyner-Kersee, a six-time Olympic medalist who was named by Sports Illustrated as the “Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century.”
