Community grieves the loss of 34-year-old paramedic killed in motorcycle accident

The community continues to grieve the loss of a first responder who was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident Monday morning.

We’re learning more about 34-year-old Eddie Lustro, the paramedic tragically and suddenly killed yesterday morning on his way home after a 12-hour shift. Those who knew him are remembering him as “a true hero.”

“It’s very clear that he was well-loved,” said Doug Key, regional director, American Medical Response Riverside County.

Family and friends of paramedic Eddie Lustro could be seen laying candles and flowers at the site where he was killed. “He was a guy that was always willing to do whatever it takes if someone needed some help or if we needed extra assistance he was always the first one to volunteer,” said Key.

Lustro was a beloved field training officer, husband and friend: “They just couldn’t say enough about how understanding and caring he was,” he said.

His wife, Amy, said in a statement that he was “passionate about paramedicine and teaching…and found so much joy in watching his students succeed.”

On Monday, a procession of emergency vehicles rode down the 10, escorting his body to the coroner’s office and honoring his service to the community.

“We consider this a ‘line-of-duty’ death because he was just leaving work,” said Key.

The American Medical Response is offering grief counselors and therapists for colleagues of Lustro. “They were a very close group…they knew Eddie very well it’s obviously a big hit for them,” said Key.

Lustro’s loss — a testament to the truly grueling and sacrificial nature of life as a first responder: “When people call 911 they expect someone to be there. and we’re going to be there every single time so it takes dedicated people it takes people who are very selfless,” said Key.

News Channel 3 also spoke with employees in the business complex who witnessed yesterday’s crash who said they were too shaken up to appear on camera, but they’re hoping for change in the area — and that drivers remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times.
