Home invasion, sexual assault suspect was neighbor
A man arrested for a Palm Springs home invasion and sexual assault on Monday was the neighbor, PSPD Captain Mike Kovaleff said in a news conference Tuesday.
45-year-old Demitiri Giles was arrested in Riverside at 8:00 p.m. in a convenience store near the stolen vehicle.
Giles reportedly entered the residence using a “ruse”, convincing the victim that he had some of her mail, according to Kovaleff. He then entered the home, bound the victim, robbed the residence and sexually assaulted the victim. Giles lived in the same apartment complex as the victim.
The victim remains in the hospital.
Giles reportedly entered the home around 9:00 a.m.

The crime occurred at around 4:40 p.m. at a residence on the 300 block of E Stevens Road in Palm Springs, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.
When PSPD officers arrived, they found a 65-year-old woman who had been tied up and beaten, according to neighbors. Giles fled the scene in the victim’s 2007 Honda CRV.
The stolen vehicle was located with the help of tracking hardware which was installed.
Following a joint investigation by the Riverside Police Department, Riverside County’s Sheriff Department and investigators from the Riverside Auto Theft Interdiction Detail, Giles was found near the vehicle later in the evening and arrested.
The preliminary investigation found that Giles entered the apartment, attacked the victim and sexually assaulted her, causing significant injuries. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment, according to a PSPD news release.
Giles faces the following charges:
Assault With Intent To Rape in Commission of a burglary Possess Stolen Vehicle; Sexual Penetration With Force; Burglary Assault with a deadly weapon; Elder Abuse
He is being held at Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on $1,000,000 bail.

The victim described the suspect as a “black male adult in his 20s”, about 6 feet tall with a thin build. He was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.
