City council votes to close Zelda’s Nightclub for 45 days

The Palm Springs City Council held a public meeting Wednesday evening to discuss the possibly shutting down Zelda’s Nightclub in Palm Springs.

The meeting came after the nightclub consistently violated several security requirements from the city.

Over the past two years, police have responded to at least six violent calls from the nightclub. One of those incidents occurred on Jan. 20 which resulted in a shooting that left a 21-year-old dead and a 14-year-old hospitalized.

In all those cases, Zelda’s was never able to provide police with security footage. It’s an issue that dates back to 2012 when Zelda’s management sent a letter to the city promising to install security cameras.

The agreement between the city and Zelda’s was for the nightclub to offer up security footage to police within two days of request, but those videos were never available to police in recent cases making investigation nearly impossible to solve according to Palm Springs police.

News Channel 3’s Lauren Coronado asked police if they have responded to the same amount of calls to other local, popular bars. They said no other Palm Springs bars have had the same caliber of violence at their establishments.

Dozens of Zelda’s supporters spoke during public comment tonight. From current and former employees to other local business owners and members of the community. City staff also expressed their concerns over leaving more than 40 people without jobs.

Despite this, the council voted 4 to 1 to hold a hearing to discuss revoking the club’s permit. The club will also be shut down for 45 days.

The public weighed on the possib. Watch Fox 11 at 10 pm or News Channel 3 at 11 pm for a full report on what happened.
