News Channel 3 team honored with Emmy award

News Channel 3 and Gulf California Broadcasting are proud to announce a major achievement in the field of broadcast journalism, as two employees were honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Pacific Southwest Chapter with an Emmy award.

Assistant News Director Tim Kiley and Evening News Anchor and Investigative Reporter Brooke Beare received the recognition at an awards gala in Las Vegas on Saturday June 15th. Kiley and Beare competed against 12 other nominated teams in the category of News Human Interest- Single Story or Series, and won for their story Model Behavior: Reality show finalist on life after prison. The story profiled a former reality show contestant who was convicted of a series of crimes in Palm Springs and sentenced to prison.

“We spoke with Renee Alway before and after her prison time, and to see what she was like at the other end of being incarcerated was an interesting experience,” commented Kiley, who has worked for KESQ since 2002. “It’s a huge honor to receive the award. It’s difficult because of the other markets we’re up against and the other stories that are competitive in these categories to get a nomination, let alone a win.

On the podium accepting the award, Kiley joked that Beare’s title as the “Susan Lucci of the local Emmy’s” would have to be discarded. Beare has been nominated multiple times before, but this was her first Emmy win. Kiley now has four Emmy awards.

“It’s enormously gratifying to finally be able to call myself an Emmy winner,” said Beare, who was hired by CBS Local 2 in May of 2003 and has served in many capacities since that time, officially joining the News Channel 3 team in December 2018.

The Emmy Awards recognizes outstanding achievements in television, including categories such as news, documentary, graphics and promotions. The Pacific Southwest region includes San Diego, Bakersfield, Palm Springs, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
