Brush fire in Mecca burns 80 acres, 98% contained

A brush fire that broke out near Lincoln Street and Avenue 66 in Mecca has burned 80 acres and is 98% contained.

The blaze, which was reported at 10:49 a.m., has already engulfed one structure, a “small outbuilding” according to Cal Fire. The building had been abandoned and had reportedly burned several times over the last few years, according to Cal Fire Public Information Officer, Captain Fernando Herrera.

The fire was first reported at 10:49 a.m. By 11:38 a.m., the fire had burned 5-8 acres. As of 3:00 p.m., the fire has burned 80 acres. Just after 5 p.m., Cal Fire announced the fire was 50% contained.

No injuries have been reported. 28 fire engines, 125 firefighters, a helicopter, and a bulldozer have been dispatched to the scene.

Imperial Irrigation District (IID) personnel have been requested to the scene to shut off power lines in the area.

The blaze prompted a closure of Lincoln Street from Avenue 66 to Avenue 67, according to RivCoTrans.
