Fanny’s Wrapper Helps Patients Stay Dry

LA QUINTA – Caring for an elderly parent can be a challenge, but a local woman is hoping to help.

Fanny Ramirez works with the elderly in the Coachella Valley. She even started her own in-home care center almost 20 years ago and primarily cares for people with alzheimers and dementia.

For Fanny, the biggest obstacle caring for her patients is incontinence. So, Fanny made the Fanny Wrapper.

It goes over a diaper and was designed to allow dementia patients maintain dignity while also staying clean. One version is for people who are in a hospital or bed bound.

But, there are two others for patients with alzheimers or dementia who might try to take their undergarment off. Fanny started selling it seven years ago, but wasn’t completely satisfied.

“When I was done it was perfect but still we need something to know when the person is wet,” Ramirez said.

So, Fanny found an engineer who worked for NASA and specialized in sensors. Together they developed an alarm system to alert the caregiver when a patient is wet. The sensor is super sensitive and even the slightest bit of water will set the receiver off within seconds. Each receiver can manage up to four patients.

Patty Mendez has worked in Fanny’s La Quinta facility for ten years, and knows first hand the benefits.

“It benefits us because in the morning we don’t have to wake up with them all wet,” Mendez said. ” It benefits them because we are changing them at night and they don’t have to have a wet diaper on all night and they wont get sores.”
