Police Crack Down After String Of Deadly Accidents

BEAUMONT -The California Highway Patrol will be stepping up patrols in the San Gorgonio Pass in response to an increased number of fatal crashes in the area, an officer said today.

Since January, there have been seven fatal crashes that killed eight people in the pass, according to the CHP.

“The San Gorgonio Pass averaged 26 fatal traffic collisions over the last three years and is on pace for the deadliest year in over a decade,” CHP Capt. Ron Jones said.

Most of the crashes were on state Route 79 between California Road and the Ramona Expressway, and Gilman Springs Road between state Route 60 and state Route 79, CHP Officer Scott Beauchene said.

Speed and weather conditions were a factor in all of the crashes, he said.

Two of the crashes involved motorcyclists, who were both killed. Another collision involved a hit-and-run driver, who is still at large.

Officers will be increasing patrols on Gilman Springs Road and state Route 79 in the Lamb Canyon Area, which is between Beaumont and San Jacinto, according to Beauchene.

Officers will be citing motorists for speeding, unsafe lane changes, unsafe passing and seat belts violations, he said.

Beauchene also offered several tips for motorists driving during bad weather, urging them to slow down, leave ample distance between other vehicles, making sure windshield wipers are in good condition and using headlights.

He also reminded residents to prepare for bad weather by leaving early.

Motorists can check road conditions by calling (800) 427-7623.
