First Commissioning Of A Warship In Orange County
SEAL BEACH – The first commissioning of a warship in Orange County was held Saturdayat U.S. Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach.
The U.S.S. Dewey features the most technologically advanced air defense systems and can carry two helicopters, station spokesman Gregg Smith said.
The U.S.S. Dewey’s home port will be in San Diego. The Seal Beach Station is for loading and unloading munitions, Smith said.
About 4,000 people attended theceremony. Three thousand tickets for the event were snatched up quickly when the Navy offered them in January.
The destroyer was named after Adm. George Dewey, best known for leading a squadron of warships April 30, 1898, and defeating a Spanish fleet in the Manila Bay without a single American casualty during the Spanish-American War.
