Alice In Wonderland Tops Box Office This Weekend
LOS ANGELES – “Alice in Wonderland” shattered records for the normally-sleepy midwinter box office, and is expected to open with $116.3 million in North American receipts, Hollywood.com estimated today.
The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaboration is the sixth-largest opening film ever, and the first movie ever to top the $100 million domestic water mark in any non-summer season or holiday period, said industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
The Disney film shattered numerous records, including the biggest 3-D opening of all time, biggest IMAX opening of all time, he said. It is expected to gross $210.3 million worldwide.
Opening in second place was “Brooklyn’s Finest” from Overture, with $13.5 million in estimated sales.
Third place went to “Shutter Island” from Paramount, with $13.3 million in estimated sales this weekend, and a running total of $95.8 million over three weeks.
