Hundreds Walk For Two Causes, One Goal
PALM DESERT/INDIO – Hundreds walk in two different locations to fight two different diseases, but their goal is the same.
“We definitely want to find a cure,” says Susan Rudenick whose mother had Alzheimer’s.
“My ultimate goal is to find a cure,” says Mirna Flores, Indio Relay For Life Team Development Chairperson.
At the Memory Walk in Palm Desert 500 people join together to fight Alzheimer’s.
“Once you see it in the eyes of someone you love, you’d do anything for a cure,” says Rudenick.
She’s not alone, most people at the event have witnessed the disease’s devastating effects. As they all come together, it becomes one big support group.
In Indio at the Relay For Life people are also walking for a cure, but their focus is cancer.
Ruby Munoz lost her mother to breast cancer, but the disease didn’t start or stop there. Nearly a dozen of her family members either have cancer, died from cancer or are fighting it. She hopes walks and fundraising will help end the cycle.
“My sister has seven kids, I have a little girl and two boys,” says Ruby Munoz. “Our family is growing and we hope in the future there is something better for them.”
Ofelia Ferderer is proof that beating the disease is possible, she’s asix year survivor.
“It’s hard, it’s hard, but at the same time it is wonderful because I survived,” says Ferderer.
Like everyone at both walks, Ferderer hopes each step forward is one closer to victory for all.
“We need to work on this and grow and find a cure,” says Ferderer.
The Relay For Life continues in Indio until Sunday morning. Both events on Saturday raised money for disease research, patient services and education.
