Orange County City Goes For World Record For Largest Amount Of Pasta
GARDEN GROVE – An above-ground pool full of more than 13,700 pounds of pasta will put Garden Grove into the Guinness Book of World Records, it was reported today.
The gigantic dish of spaghetti whipped up in the parking lot of the Buca di Beppo at 11757 Harbor Blvd. on Friday out-sized the standing record set by the Watniya Restaurants-Sbarro on March 28, 2009 in Doha, Qatar, for 9,767 pounds, the Orange County Register reported.
With 120 gallons of marinara sauce on top, the dish weighed in at 13,780 pounds, the newspaper reported.
“We hit this one out of the park so the record will stand for a while,” said Kevin Sheehan, general manager of Buca di Beppo told the Register.
The spaghetti will not be wasted but donated to the local agricultural community and used for animal feed, said Steve Cervenka, vice president of Buca di Beppo.
The weight of the pasta was certified by a notary officer. That record along with videos and photographs of the largest bowl of pasta will be shipped off to the Guinness Book of World Records, Cervenka said.
The Italian restaurant will celebrate its victory by giving out free bowls of spaghetti Monday in its restaurants nationwide. Dine-in guests who buy a pasta entree can receive a free 14-ounce portion of spaghetti with their choice of meat sauce or marinara sauce.
Cervenka said the chain, recently acquired by Planet Hollywood International Inc., was committed to donating 10,000 pounds of dry pasta to charities nationwide as part of this event.
