Sheriff’s Station Windows Shot Out In Mecca

Windows shot out at a sheriff’s substation in Mecca did not appear to be connected to recent, unsolved attacks on Hemet law enforcement, a sheriff’s deputy said today.

A deputy discovered the windows had been shot out around 7:30 a.m. at the unoccupied substation at 91260 Avenue 66, said Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident may have been vandalism, and does not appear to be connected to the attacks in Hemet, Valenzuela said.

Deputies shut down Avenue 66 between Date Palm and Brown streets for several hours to collect bullet casings, she said.

“They’re trying to find out how it was done and see if they can collect any evidence,” Valenzuela said.

The substation, which is not staffed, is used by deputies to make phone calls or write reports, she said.
