Fox Keeps Favorites With New Fall Schedule Announced
Fox Broadcasting’s fall schedule unveiled today includes two new comedies from the creators of “My Name is Earl” and “Arrested Development” and a prime-time soap opera about a deceitful Texas oil man.
Series not returning include the first-year comedies “Brothers” and “Sons of Tucson”; the first-year drama “Past Life”; “Til Death,” a comedy that ran for four seasons; and “Dollhouse,” a science fiction series that ran for two seasons. Fox announced in March that its counter-terrorism drama “24” would end its eight-season run May 24.
Of Fox’s three series that premiered last fall, the musical comedy “Glee” and the animated comedy “The Cleveland Show” will return for second seasons. The midseason drama “Human Target” also was renewed. “The Good Guys,” an hourlong action comedy which premieres Wednesday, is also part of the fall schedule.
“Last season, we did what Fox does best — we took some risks that paid off,” Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said.
“Now we’re going to up the ante with an even more diverse and creative roster of programs for next year. With three daring new dramas, a fresh new animated series and three new live-action comedies, we’re positioned to rebuild the Fox comedy brand, introduce the next generation of unique characters and deliver an even more compelling experience for our viewers next season.”
One of Fox’s new fall half-hour comedies is “Running Wilde,” produced by “Arrested Development” creator Mitch Hurwitz. It stars Will Arnett, an “Arrested Development” cast member, as an immature playboy, desperately trying to win or buy the heart of his childhood sweetheart played by Keri Russell.
Fox’s other new fall half-hour comedy is “Raising Hope,” produced by “My Name is Earl” creator Greg Garcia. What Fox describes as a sweet, offbeat comedy stars Lucas Neff as a “well-meaning screw-up trying his best to raise his infant daughter with the help of the eccentric family who did a less-than- stellar job of raising him.”
Fox’s new fall drama is “Lonestar,” which stars James Wolk as a charismatic schemer married to the beautiful daughter (Adrianne Palicki) of the patriarch of a Texas oil family (Jon Voight), who also lives an adulterous second life 400 miles away, secretly bilking local investors. Its producers include Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman, the creators of the Fox prime-time drama “Party of Five,” which ran from 1994-2000.
Of Fox’s 15 hours of fall primetime programming, there will be six hours of drama, three hours of unscripted programming, two hours of animated comedy, one hour of sports, two live-action half-hour comedies and two hourlong series that defy conventional genres, “Glee” and “The Good Guys.”
Fox’s new midseason series will include “Terra Nova,” science fiction series whose producers include Steven Spielberg; the police drama “Ride- Along”; the live-action comedy “Mixed Signals” and the animated comedy “Bob’s Burgers.”
“American Idol,” will begin its season in January as usual, but with changes. Its Tuesday performance show, which usually runs for an hour, will be 90 minutes long, while the Wednesday results show will be cut a half-hour to 30 minutes.
Fox also announced that it will air an episode of “Glee” in the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot.
