Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs unveils new upgrades.

The clubhouse interior at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort looks brand new.

It’s one of a few of the improvements just completed at the course, which is owned by the city of Palm Springs.

“I think what they’ve done is fabulous. The minute I walked in last week, I noticed it right away, and I was very impressed with what was done,” said golfer Roberta Harper.

The city spent more than $500,000 on the upgrades, which include several new flat screen televisions in the clubhouse, and a gleaming new bar.

They also re-did the patio breezeway in front of the clubhouse, and they remodeled the bathrooms.

The money for the project came from golf course revenues.

“It has been a complaint for a long time, it is the clubhouse and the bathrooms, and what can we do? So today, to celebrate the renovation of the clubhouse and restrooms is phenomenal,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet.

Pougnet was at the podium Tuesday morning outside the clubhouse, surrounded by city staff and staff from the course, all celebrating the improvements.

Back in the mid-1990s, the average number of rounds played per year at Tahquitz Creek was about 45,000.

This year, they are on track for 105,000 rounds, which would make 2012 the best year ever, according to Tahquitz Creek General Manager Brandon Alexander.

Alexander says he feels especially good about what is going on at the course, especially considering the fact that many of the 120-plus golf courses and resorts in the valley are struggling.

“Well it feels great of course, but we want the rest of the industry to follow suit and also do well. I think this weather year will make a big difference and give some people confidence in the golf industry once again,” said Alexander.

The city purchased Tahquitz Creek Golf Course a few years back, and the city manager says 2011 was the first time in about eight years that the course turned a profit.
