Palm Desert Public Library to Close for Renovations

Saturday is the last day to check out a book, at the Palm Desert Public Library, before they close for remodeling, until the Fall. Palm Desert City Librarian, Jeannie Kays tells us, “When you walk in the front door, you’re going to be amazed when it reopens. It will look completely different.”

Until then, if you have books or dvd’s to return, you can take them to Palm Desert’s book drop or visit one of the other county libraries. Kays says, “Our three nearest libraries are the Thousand Palms library, the Cathedral City Library and the La Quinta library.”

You can also go to Indio or get a separate card for the Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs independent libraries. If you have computer access at home, log onto www.rivlib.net for e-books, tutorial service and to download music.

The 16 year-old library will undergo a $3.5 million-dollar renovation, including a new roof, new carpet, and paint job. The number of computers, with internet access will triple. And tables with outlets, will let you plug-in your own laptop.

Andrew Uffenheimer is visiting the library with his daughter Amanda. He says, “My computer battery is about to die and I have no where to plug it in, so that would certainly help.”

The other half of the father-daughter duo is opting for a good, old-fashioned page-turner. Amanda says, “Since I’m reading this really good series, I kind of prefer books right now.”

The next time Amanda comes to check out a book, the front lobby will be transformed into a book browsing area, with new furniture, resembling a bookstore. No matter what the library looks like, one thing won’t change–it’ll always welcome those who love to read. Andrew says, “Something like that will never go out of style.”

The College of the Desert side of the library is closed for spring break this week, but it will reopen for students, next week, until it closes down for the summer. The library is also talking about opening a temporary location, but that has yet to be determined.
